The Operating Principle of Solenoid Valves

There are two common types of solenoid valves: Normally Closed (NC) and Normally Open (NO).

Normally Closed (NC) Valve

In a Normally Closed valve, the valve is initially in a completely closed state, preventing the flow of fluid or gas. When an electrical control signal is applied, a magnetic field is generated at the solenoid coil. This magnetic force pulls the piston, which is blocking the valve, causing the valve to open and allow fluid or gas to pass through. When the electrical signal is turned off, the magnetic force disappears. At this point, the spring force pushes the piston back to close the valve. The valve returns to its default Normally Closed state, blocking the flow of material.

Normally Open (NO) Valve

In a Normally Open valve, the valve is initially in an open state when there is no electrical signal. When an electrical voltage is applied (typically 24 VDC or 220 VAC), an electromagnetic force at the solenoid coil pulls the piston to close the valve.

When the electrical signal is stopped, the spring pushes the piston out, causing the valve to open again. The valve returns to its default Normally Open state, allowing fluid to flow through.
